Disclaimer: The characters of Inspector Morse, Sergeant Lewis and Superintendent Strange all belong to Colin Dexter, and Carlton/central TV. I'm not making any money of this, and I don't want to either.

Inspector Morse had been struggling with the last word in the crossword puzzle in the Times the whole morning. The crossword had been simple, most of it at least. And then it was this one word.

'A four-letter word' was the clue, and Morse had tried every one he knew. The word had four letters, and the third letter was 'V'.
A four-letter word.

Lewis looked amusedley over at Morse's desk. That crossword had now taken over ten minutes! He wondered wether or not he should tell Morse that. Chances were that Morse was aware of it too. And not too interested to hear it from another person, even if it was his sergeant and close friend. Very close.

Then a bellow from Strange's office put an end to Morse's crossword problems and Lewis' ponderings, and another work day began.

The day's work had ended and everything had been written down in a report. But the crossword puzzle was still gnawing on Morse's mind. He knew that the answer was probably right in front of him, but he still couldn't figure it out. That day he asked Lewis to drive the Jaguar home. Lewis had taken the wheel with pleasure since the Jag was a dream to drive. Morse sat next to him, trying to figure out the elusive word. Sighing he turned to his lover.
"Lewis, do you know any four-letter words?
"Only the usual ones, sir. Fuck, cock, prick..."
"That's not a four-letter word. That's a five-letter word."
Lewis continued; "tits, damn, hell..."
"Stop it!...Please...I've aleady tried those."
"Sorry, sir." Lewis didn't sound too sorry though. In fact there was a smile on his lips.
Morse returned to the puzzle.

Lewis parked the car on the driveway up to Morse's house, which had been *their* house for a year now.

He turned to Morse and said:
"Have I told you lateley that I love you?"
"No", Morse answered absentley, "not since this... A-ha!" Quickly Morse pencilled in the letters of the word. "Lewis! You have done it again!"
"Oh. What?"
"Love. It's a four-letter word", he explained. The he added, in a lower voice; "and I love you too, Lewis."

If they had been indoors, Morse would have kissed Lewis.

THE END
